LEGAL ASSOCIATE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

This form is intended for the assessment of legal associates. You are to take into account the performance of the relevant associate over the year, and considering the performance improvement from the last assessment.

The criteria contained in the form are not intended to be exhaustive. Views should be expressed on any aspect of the associate’s performance and development that are considered important.

The form asks for the associate to be rated across a number of different dimensions. Please use the Rating Scale below to guide your assessment.

Quality of Work/ Output

1. Consider all the work/ output that you have received from the associate e.g. contracts, pleadings, submissions, opinions, research, letters, other legal documents etc. Please rate the overall quality of the work/ output as follows:

2. Drafting quality – Is the associate’s pleadings, contracts, opinions, letters, memoranda and other written documents consistently well written and well thought out? Is he/she careful to avoid errors (typographical, factual or legal) in the documents produced? Is the document well structured, flows well and is easy to follow?

3. Analytical quality – Has the associate demonstrated the ability to identify and properly analyze the legal issues that arise? Is the associate able to identify and address the risks and implications to clients? Is the associate able to come up with proper solutions having regard to the applicable law?

Communication and Presence

4. Consider the oral communication and presentation of the associate both to yourself as partner and to clients. Does the associate speak well and clearly? Is he/she easy to understand? Does he/she project self-confidence and assurance?

Attitude and Work Ethics

Please rate the associate’s attitude and work ethics along the following dimensions:

5. Timeliness - Does the associate revert with his/her work in a timely and responsive fashion? Does he/she have to be ‘chased’ for output? Does he/she have a habit of ‘sitting on things’?

6. Ability to work independently - Can this associate handle complex and/or significant matters (having regard to his or her years of practice)? Has he or she demonstrated the ability to handle complicated matters competently with minimal supervision? Do you have confidence delegating responsibility for complex matters (having regard to his or her years of practice) to this person?

7. Management of files - Is the associate organized and effectively manages the files assigned to him or her? Is the file organized well and kept up to date? Does the associate have a habit of updating clients regularly? Does the associate keep ‘on top’ of the file and abreast of deadlines? Is the associate up to date and aware of the latest status of the file? Does the associate ‘own’ his or her file and runs/ manages it effectively, instead of waiting to be reminded or told what to do?

8. Commitment - Do you think the associate is dedicated to working hard? Does he or she have a strong work ethic? Does he or she demonstrate a willingness to do what is necessary to ensure that the job is done properly and that the firm can deliver to clients?

Client Relations

9. Consider the associate’s effectiveness from a client’s perspective – is the associate responsive and accepted by clients? Does the associate engage well with clients? Does the associate deliver results to clients? Please rate the overall quality of client service from the associate.

Overall Rating

10. Consider the overall performance of the associate, along all the dimensions above and taking into account any other relevant factors. How would you rate the associate – is he or she a superior performer, a strong/ good performer, an average performer or a poor performer?
